Early Life and Political Beginnings
Alpha Condé was born into the Malinke ethnic group in Guinea.
At the age of 15, he immigrated to France, where he attended school in Paris and studied at the Sorbonne. Due to his opposition to the regimes of Ahmed Sékou Touré and Lansana Conté, Condé remained in exile until 1991.
Leadership of the Rally of the Guinean People
Upon his return to Guinea, Condé became the leader of the Rally of the Guinean People (RPG), an opposition party affiliated with the Socialist International.
The RPG drew support primarily from members of the Malinke ethnic group.
