Thomas Rimer describes Ariyoshi Sawako () as "one of the finest of post-war Japanese writers."   This writer, though her life was relatively short, was extremely productive, and it is unfortunate that of the over short stories, novels, plays, musicals, and movie scripts which she was able to write or produce, only a handful are available in English.
